Impact of Socialization and Collective Mindset on Creativity
Why we’re not more creative
Society encourages left brain thinking
For the past few centuries left brain thinking [logic, language, facts, details] has been encouraged, favored and rewarded to the detriment of right brain thinking [pictures, art, creativity, emotion, intuition, imagination] and the seat of joy, delight, fun, surprise, and paradox.
Left brain dominance makes you fearful of being wrong, of making mistakes, and you rarely do things merely for the sake of doing it without preconceived ideas, objectives or goals.
Habits keep you doing the same things over and over without questioning whether the results serve you or not. Most of us operate from this auto-pilot mode virtually all the time.
In business productivity and profits are paramount, so making mistakes, failing, and experimenting is discouraged. The result – creativity suffers. Even if there us a concerted effort to encourage creativity, there is usually but a small window of opportunity and limited budget to make it work.
Things may be changing quite rapidly in some areas (technology), but in others (humanities, ) progress is much slower.
Left brain success is…
Success is measured in what you do and have. It’s about your image; your position at work, the type of work you do, the possessions you have, the car you drive, where you live, the size of your house, how much money you ‘seem to have’.
You compare yourself to others which makes you feel good or bad depending where you are in the pecking order. This can also lead to competition, jealousy, envy, avarice, gluttony because it’s not enough… you are not ~~~ enough. [Fill in the blanks ~~~ thin, wealthy, strong, beautiful, young, etc.]
Right brain success is…
Who you are being and the pleasure you derive from playing with ideas, experimenting, exploring, taking risks, adventure, observing, absorbing, learning and it’s about moving into the realm where mastery becomes art in whatever you are involved in. No measuring here, no comparing. You don’t need to because you are who you are, uniquely you.
Geniuses are challenged by current day experts
Experts are not necessarily geniuses. Experts have been proven wrong.
Experts are not all geniuses
Experts have been wrong through the ages
People believed the world was flat and that earth was the centre of the universe…
IBM, the mainframe giant, said PCs won’t take off. They went out of business.
Bill Gates apparently said 64 Kilobytes (Kb) of memory should be enough for anyone on a PC. Then the measure became megabytes. 1 Mb is 1000 Kb. The next step was Gigabytes (Gb). 1Gb = 1000 Mb. Now we have Terabytes (Tb) 1Tb = 1000 Gb. (In the year 2018-19.) They are probably already working on the next 1000 up, maybe called Nanobytes?
We now have more memory on our wristwatches than we used to run the whole South African government id-book system on in the mid ‘70s.
