Get better results by collaborating with your mind
Your brain does what it thinks you want it to do, (i.e. the thoughts you fill your mind with – the images you have in your mind and the words you use to yourself), good or bad. If you are not doing what you want to do, it is an indication that you are filling your brain with thoughts that are not properly collaborating with your wants, desires, and even needs.
Habits die hard
Your brain loves the familiar, so it will go to the automatic habits first. If you want change, you need to change your automatic habits by thinking ‘better’ thoughts. Your brain also moves away from pain and towards pleasure. If you think something is going to be ‘unpleasant’, you will not do it, no matter how much you may think you want it. You will have to change your perception from unpleasant to pleasant first, only then will your brain respond. (This may be difficult when it really is unpleasant / painful / uncomfortable, but it can be done.)
Change your brain, change your outcomes
There are 3 ways your brain can be changed:
- Chemically (usually short term)
- Structurally (usually long term) this takes place physically in the dendrites and neurons.
- Functionally – if you do things repeatedly, these areas (brain regions) get more excitable and so you are more likely to ‘go there’, these areas are more prepared and ready for action (‘paraat’ in Afrikaans).
Now do you understand why it seems so difficult to learn to do things different from the way you used to? So don’t be too hard on yourself, just keep at it. What you need to transcend these ingrained bad habits is persistence, tenacity, a good sense of humor and some loving kindness.
I would rather laugh at my foibles than cry, and be kind, rather than criticize and get upset because I didn’t quite make it. However, I must add – how you set yourself up has a lot to do with how successful the outcome is.
