What Absenteeism Costs you
It is bad enough when people are sick and do not pitch up for work on a regular basis as it means you are then short-staffed;
- you cannot serve clients the way you would like to, or
- your projects suffer and are delayed,
- you have to find others to stand in for them (if possible),
- it often puts extra pressure on everyone else, and may even mean that others have to work overtime as a result,
- it obviously depends who it is and what they do, but it could cause havoc with your planning, production, maintenance, quality control, customer service, and so on…

Research has given us a benchmark, but it this estimate is not 100% accurate because it does not cater for all eventualities nor circumstances: e.g. extra, unplanned overtime that has to be worked to catch up, needing to get extra staff from an employment agency to take care of the gap, and so on. It is not a straightforward calculation.
What it also does not take into account is if there has been an accident and people are recuperating, or have special needs that need to be accommodated; rehabilitation and so on.
The only way to get the exact amount is to have a system to record these absences and calculate it for each person based on their salary, bonus, and the impact that their absence has on the rest of the organization. Absent but not sick
Then there are the odd days here and there where people take a day off, but do not have a doctor’s sick note [some organizations do not require this for a single day off]. How sure are you that this gets recorded in your system?

Present but not doing much
We call this presenteeism; they might as well be absent. The dawdling, go slow, chat to everyone in the office, staying away on extended lunch, tea and smoke breaks, not to mention getting stuck in the loo for extended periods of time, chatting to friends and family on the phone as often as possible, chronic involvement with their cellphone, distracted by social media, text messages, and other ‘stuff’. We have seen it all.
And… at work but as sick as a dog, with a high probability of infecting others… No one can do their best work if they are feeling under the weather – and it often prolongs the agony.
